CODE projection technology: a complex system for an unforgettable experience

CODE – Digital Experience Center's unique visual world is defined by several components: the space, the technology, and, of course, the soundscape, which is an integral part of the equation. We asked Fülöp Farkas, a member of the Glowing Bulbs formation, about the projection technology used in CODE.

What type of projection technology is used in CODE?

We have two main areas in CODE, one is Hexagon and the other is Studio. The difference between the two spaces is well illustrated by the fact thatthe Hexagon, which covers several hundred square meters, has a total of 14 projectors projecting content onto the walls and floor, while the Studio has two. Of course, this does not distract from the value of the Studio, it is simply a different scale. Controlling 14 projectors simultaneously from the control room is very complex and complicated in terms of technology, two computers with four video cards are required. By way of comparison: an average user's laptop uses a single output, while we have a background technology that allows multiple computers multiple video cards, and multiple applications. 14 images can be synchronized.

How are visuals and sound connected? How do the two work together to create the perfect experience?

The relationship between visuals and sound can be approached from several angles. In many cases, we primarily deal with visuals, and from that point on, sound generally follows the image in our work. but regardless of this, we have often worked with existing sound, and then the image follows the sound—for example, in the case of video clips. This can also be applied in Hexagon, so it is possible to create content based on existing sound, and it is possible to create sound content based on previously created visual material. It is indisputable that sound is what brings images to life; a video on its own can be almost completely lifeless if it does not have sound to accompany it, which attracts more attention.

Do you have a favorite space in CODE?

Yes, definitely Hexagon. Primarily because of the technical challenges posed by the 14 projectors.

If you were to create a work of art about how you see CODE, what sounds and/or images would be included in it, and what would it look like?

There are many grid-based creative jobs. In connection with CODE, I imagine a hexagonal grid. That would be exciting.

If you could "magically" improve any technological device, what would it be and what could it do?

This is going to be very technical... Generally, only a certain number of projectors can be controlled from a single computer or source. A long time ago, the need arose for a device that could distribute multiple signals to a single projector without the same signal being distributed to multiple projectors. device that can distribute multiple signals to a projector, not by sending the same signal everywhere, but by distributing a higher resolution input. This already exists in 4K, but it would be good if there were an 8K version as well.
