Veszprém and the Bakony-Balaton region pushed their limits on Challenge Day
More than 5,000 people turned out for the highlight of the Veszprém-Balaton European Sports Strategy 2026 program series, Challenge Day on March 21. Although the 4 GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ record attempts ultimately failed, the event was still a huge success, as thousands of people took to the streets at once, and the day was defined by community experiences, with movement serving as the connecting thread.
The 12-hour 100-meter community relay race drew just as large a crowd as the challenges in Old Town Square, the 60-second synchronized high-knee run, the group running in place, or even hopping on one leg. More important than the numbers, however, was the good cheer and perseverance that characterized these programs, as the participants felt great throughout, smiling, laughing, encouraging one another as they worked toward their common goal. With Challenge Day, Veszprém and the Bakony-Balaton region clearly pushed their boundaries, as evidenced by the incredible bondbridge that formed during the event. The joy of moving together brought people together without age limits. From the elderly over eighty to toddlers just a few years old, everyone took part in the challenges. The prestige and atmosphere of the event were further enhanced by the fact that participants could exercise alongside the biggest names in Hungarian sports, whom they could even challenge to a one-on-one match. Joining us were Paris Olympic champion fencer Gergely Siklósi, Olympic silver medalist wrestler Viktor Lőrincz, Olympic silver medalist Miklós Ungvári, and Olympic bronze medalist Éva Csernoviczki, judo. Also joining the crowd to participate in the festivities and add to the event’s splendor were former national team soccer player Zoltán Gera, hockey player Levente Szuper, six-time world champion Attila Katus, and Veszprém handball legend Nándor Fazekas.
As part of Challenge Day, an exciting relay race was held at the Sports Hall on March 15 Street among the municipalities participating in the Region of Sport. This event perfectly embodied the main objective of the Region of Sport, namely that exercise and sports should be the strongest bond between communities in the region. This broad-based collaboration was also supported by the University of Pannonia. The region’s leading institution of higher education, as a partner of the Region of Sport, it actively participated in the daily programs, contributing to the success of the event.
“The European Region of Sport has achieved its goal, as we managed to get thousands of people moving on Challenge Day. We have proven that physical activity can be a common language that connects the region’s settlements and the people living here. Everyone can be very proud of themselves.”
“On Challenge Day, Veszprém and the surrounding region clearly pushed their limits. This day demonstrated that we are capable of coming together to move toward a more conscious, active lifestyle, which is one of the keys to our goal: “Let’s make Veszprém one of Europe’s twenty most livable cities by 2030.”
