Dr. Irén Bilkei: The Nobles of Zala at the Battle of Mohács

Dr. Irén Bilkei’s lecture marks the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Mohács; it honors all the known and unknown nobles of Zala (and Vas) counties who took part in the battle on August 29, 1526. The presentation briefly outlines the events of the Jagiellonian era, the battle with its tragic outcome, and the historical developments of the following years, with particular regard to the fate of the participants from Zala (and Vas) counties. The lecture also mentions Dorottya Kanizsay, who, according to tradition, buried the battle’s dead, as well as documented records from Zala County regarding the beginning of the Turkish conquest.
