In 1916, the choir of the town of Ramsden in Yorkshire loses nearly all of its male members to conscription. Despite the difficulties, the choir’s leadership wants to continue their work: so they decide to recruit local young men who, due to their age, are not subject to conscription. Along with the young men, a new choir director arrives: unyielding, unconventional Dr. Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes), who employs unique methods. As the conscription orders arrive one after another, the entire community realizes that the best defense against the chaos that is turning their lives upside down is to play music together.
