Hegyhát – a quiet, small town with a special atmosphere in Vas County

Hegyhát is a peaceful village with a population of just over a hundred peaceful village in Vas County, in the Körmend district. It is located in one of the most peaceful areas of Western Transdanubia, just 7 km southeast of Körmend, close to Highway 76.

The traditional rural lifestyle of the settlement, its natural environment and hospitable residents make it popular among those seeking true rural tranquility. Geographical location

Hegyhát is located in the hilly region of Felső-Kemenes. Neighboring settlements: Nagymizd, Hegyhátodász, Nádasd, and Katafa.
The settlement used to be crossed by Highway 76, but today it runs along a bypass, making the village quieter and more livable.

Historical overview

Hegyhát is one of the oldest noble communities in the region. Its history spans several centuries:

  • The area was already thriving during the Roman era.
  • According to folklore, a man named Sal was the first to settle here, which may be where the name comes from.
  • The first documented mention of the area dates back to the 14th century, under the name Olsál. In the 19th century, there were several traditional folk buildings here, of which the building complex at 7 Temető Street has survived as a protected monument.

The name of the settlement was derived from the former "Sál" and the Hegyhát region.
