In 1953, Ferenc Dévényi, school principal in Kőrmend, began collecting museum artifacts together with Károly Madáchy. The number of historical, guild history, and ethnographic objects grew rapidly, and they were stored in the Petőfi Square school in cupboards. When József Csaba, Csákánydoroszló's nationally renowned ornithologist and ethnographer, learned of the existence of the school museum, he donated his collection of archaeological, ethnographic, and local history materials, which he had been gathering since the 1930s.

The Batthyány archives, weapon collection, and library kept in the palace were renowned all over the country. After World War II, under the leadership of János Kőszegi, the teachers and students of the school managed to save most of the scattered lettersand deliver them to the Hungarian National Archives. The collection of historical documents from the Batthyány archives, which was subsequently transferred to the museum, comprises 2,000 items. Of the former weapon collection, 650 pieces were transferred to the National Museum, and only about half a dozen remained in Körmend, enriching the museum's collection. The museum has a significant ethnography collection based on the material collected by Edit Szikszay and Kálmán Komjáthy.

The Ministry of Culture's Museum Department granted an operating license to the "Rába Local History Collection" legalized in the mid-1960s, and elevated it to membership in the county museum organization. Savaria Museum provided professional guidance and financial support from 1964 until 2012. In 1980, the collection was elevated to museum status and, together with its 1,700 pieces, was moved to Batthyány Palace, where a permanent exhibition of selected artifacts was set up in three rooms, with offices and storage rooms next to it. It was then that Dr. Zoltán Nagy, ethnographer, took over the management of  Rába Local History Museum and led the institution until 2008. In 2004, the museum was named after Dr. László Batthyány-Strattmann.

According to the new operating license, its collection and research area covers the economic and family history of the Batthyány family's estates, as well as the history of the town's manorial center. The museum was established in 2013 by the Municipality of Körmend. In 2013, the museum was placed under the maintenance of the Local Government of Körmend, and as an institution of Körmend Cultural Center, Museum, and Library, with two departments (history and ethnography) as a regional museum, with more than 10,000 artifacts, more than half of which are tools used by local craftsmen in the past.
