Szabadság Square, Körmend
Szabadság Square in Körmend has been the heart of the town since ancient times. It once functioned as a market square, and is now the central venue for local life and cultural events. History and function: the history of the square dates back to the founding of the town; in the Middle Ages, it was located in the northeast corner of the settlement, surrounded by a moat and a castle with wooden walls, and operated as a significant market for centuries. During the 2010 reconstruction, the square was designed to visually, spiritually, and physically connect the old town, the main square, and the nearby Batthyány-Strattmann palace complex. Today, the square, often referred to as the "living room of the town," is the venue for local and national holidays, festivals, and other major events. Sights and attractions: Szabadság Square is home to numerous monuments of historical and artistic significance:
- Statue of Mary Immaculate: the statue in the center of the square was erected in 1822 in memory of Fülöp Batthyány's parents.
- Kossuth statue: the only full-length statue of Kossuth in Vas County, created by János Horvay and unveiled in 1907.
- 1848 Körmend Honvéd Memorial: Located in the southeast corner of the square.
Among the buildings on the square are the old town hall and the Dr. Batthyány-Strattmann László Museum, which is also located nearby. Szabadság Square is therefore not just a traffic hub, but also a community space rich in historical memories, which is an important part of Körmend's identity.
