Introduction
Marcali is a settlement that developed in the Marcali Hills region near Lake Balaton, where archaeological finds indicate that human settlement was already present in the Neolithic period, and in the Roman period, the Savaria-Sopianae road passed through the area.
The history of the town can be traced back to medieval sources: the name "Marcel's vineyard" appears as a geographical name, linking the name Marcali to the name Marcel, and presents the main stages of the rise of the Marczali family.
Today's city offerings have a strong cultural and recreational focus: the tourist guide lists Marcali Town Bath and Leisure Center, Marcali Museum, Bernáth Aurél Gallery, and Marcali Cultural Center (Kulturális Korzó), while the monuments include a Gothic parish church, several churches and chapels, and the neo-baroque palace that serves as a hospital.
Location & Accessibility
Marcali is located 10 km south of the M7 motorway, along Route 68. Its bus station is a regional hub, which is also served by long-distance routes. Those arriving to the area by train should transfer at Balatonmáriafürdő railway station.
