Tapolca Mill Lake
Introduction
Mill Lake Tapolca is located in the heart of the town and is one of the most romantic and iconic areas in Hungary. The lake is fed by warm spring water rising from the karst cave system beneath the town, which keeps its temperature at 64–68°F (18–20°C) year-round, so it never freezes in winter. The water mill standing on the shore dates back to the 13th–14th centuries, though its predecessor was already operating here during the Árpád era.
Today, the mill functions as a hotel and, with its modernized water wheel, partly generates renewable energy. Surrounding the lake are colorful houses, restaurants, cafés, and promenades evoking a medieval atmosphere reminiscent of a Mediterranean harbor. Koi carp and sturgeon swim in the water, while a playground and park welcome visitors along the shore.
Mill Lake is freely accessible year-round and is especially popular for its summer lights, Trout and Wine Festival in the fall, and the sight of steaming water in winter. Restaurants, cafés, ice cream parlors, a playground, and event venues can all be found along the lakeside.
Accessibility
On foot from the train station (trains arrive from Székesfehérvár, Budapest, Sümeg, and the northern shore of Lake Balaton), it is about a 15-20 minute walk, while from the bus station it is 300 meters east on Deák Ferenc Street. Paid parking is available on Batsányi János Street and Nagyköz Street. The lakeside promenade is flat and easy to walk on.
